Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), a literal translation of this phrase is that NLP enables, teaches and empowers us to better understand the way that our brain (neuro), processes the words we use (linguistic) and how that can impact on our past, present and future, (programming).
In other words...
Neuro stands for the mind and how this influences the body.
This is more than just our physical brain, but the way in which the brain affects our bodies on a conscious and unconscious level.
Linguistic is essentially how we use language and not just by way of the words we choose to use, but also the questions we ask, the statements we make and tonality of voice.
Language is incredibly powerful, giving us deeper insights into what a person thinks and how they view their unique, personal world. Programming, contrary to the confusing terminology, is not about programming a person to think certain things, feel a particular way or do things in a certain way. In the context of NLP, it's the process of examining the thinking and patterns a person uses habitually, i.e. their programs and how this affects the person's life.
We all have our own programs, but many are simply unaware of them and the impact they have.
NLP uses the power of language to break down barriers which we unconsciously create for ourselves.
NLP can help with issues such as stress, phobias, resolving destructive relationship patterns, improve communication skills as well as giving us a deeper understanding of our own unique mental map of the world.
An NLP practitioner has been trained to recognise an individuals limiting beliefs, by unveiling the persons mental map and working with them in order to move forward.
